Journal Entry #7 (April 29, 2021)

With this entry, I have submitted the final draft to my Lab Report assignment. Honestly speaking, out of all the assignments that I have written so far I can say that this one was particularly hard to do. Even now after handing in the final draft, I still feel that it was a sub-par paper that could have definitely been better. Although I still feel that it was lacking in many ways, I hope that I was able to be as concise as I could be with presenting the research and topic.

Currently, we are in the beginning stages of our Engineering Proposal assignment. Even though it is just the start, I am feeling somewhat confident with the topic that I have chosen for this paper. I decided to write a proposal about constructing storm surge barriers around the coastal parts of New York City. The way that the affects of Super Storm Sandy from 9 years ago is still affecting NYC residents is appalling. To me, for a city that is in the East Coast of the US and has a lot of funding to it, it makes no sense that there were no pre-cautions set in place in the case that such a natural disaster were to ever hit. This is why I am excited to write about this topic, as it leads me to not only talk about a way to help protect the city but it also brings up the topic of global warming/climate change. As each year passes, climate change is progressively getting worse. The dependency on fossil fuels and how unaware people are with their carbon footprint, it is no wonder that there has been a surge in natural disasters. The environment and wildlife isn’t the only thing being affected here, it is us humans as well. If we don’t want the extinction of various wildlife and plant species to fasten, then we as humans need to act upon saving this planet. It isn’t just the planet we are saving, it is also helping preserve life and lessen the dangers that could possibly plague the living creatures in our world.

I am looking forward to writing this assignment and can’t wait for the research that I will be doing in regards to it. I am also excited to read the various topics and ideas that my peers are planning to write about. They all have such bright and innovative ideas that are going to make such great contributions to not only NYC, but to the whole world as well.
